I had the opportunity to ask Sally some questions about running, reading, and the real stuff of motherhood.
What are your kid’s names and ages?
Julian is 3. I also have two teenage stepdaughters, Devon and Graysyn.
You’ve been a member of Run Club for several years now. What's your favorite thing about Run Club?
I like the support and accountability. I have run with other training groups but nothing comes close to the support and camaraderie of Run Club. The moms in this group have not only gotten me through early morning weekday and weekend long runs, but have also helped to get me through these first years of motherhood.
You are a Body Back client, as well! What do you like about Body Back?
Body Back was something completely new for me. I had played soccer until about ten years ago and then took up running. I hadn't done boot camps, circuit training, cross training, strength training, etc., and Body Back has really opened my eyes to the need for all of that. Most of all, Body Back makes that sort of exercise enjoyable.
You are so active! Do you have a favorite exercise?
Running. It's peaceful for me. I have trouble quieting my mind. Running gives me a chance to sometimes really think through an issue but also gives me time to completely clear my mind. Runner's high is real.
What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Everything. I waited a really long time to be a mom and it is so much more than I even imagined. If I had to pick one thing, it's watching my son's personality develop. He definitely has a sense of humor.
What is something you wish you'd known before you became a mom?
Just how exhausted I would be. All the time. Not just the lack of sleep, but also the mental energy needed to stay on top of everything. But also just how incredible it is. It really is indescribable.
I heard you work outside of the home in addition to being a mom. What do you do?
I am the Associate Director of Human Resources at the University of Baltimore. I have been in higher education for the last eighteen years and I love working in the university environment.
What is your favorite thing to do with the whole family?
In summer, it's the pool. You'll find us there pretty much every Saturday and Sunday morning. We also just spend a lot of time in the neighborhood parks. Julian is a runner and needs to burn a lot of energy, so we need to be outside as much as possible. This summer we have enjoyed a few amusement parks, including two visits to Knoebels and one to Dutch Wonderland. Julian is going to be a thrill seeker.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I struggle with answering this one. There's some easy ones like - I've been a Dallas Cowboys fan since I was three years old. And I don't eat anything that comes out of the water - no seafood whatsoever - so I definitely moved to the wrong city… But I guess what I'd like to share is that I've experienced depression and anxiety for almost 30 years. It's core to who I am but something I don't share. I hate the stigma attached to it and feel like people should talk about it more to normalize it, but then I hide it too. So maybe another mom reading this will know she's not alone.
What is your favorite way to relax and recharge after the kids are in bed?
If only we had time after bedtime. I miss that. When I do get free time, I read. I like all types of books. I've always loved reading and choose that over TV almost every time. My husband and I both love sports and are foodies, so if we're watching TV, it's sports or cooking shows.
Follow-up question - read anything good lately?
So many choices! For tired, overextended moms, I like Where’d You Go Bernadette or Today Will Be Different, both by Maria Semple. My favorite book is probably A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
What advice do you have for new moms?
Build a support network. Ask for help and accept it when help is offered. And know that there is no one right way to do anything, do what is best for you and your family.
Wonderful advice, Sally. Thank you so much for your advice and for your HONESTY. I know so many of our moms will appreciate knowing they are never, ever alone in the tough stuff. We are so lucky to have Sally as a part of our FIT4MOM Village!
