Join me in celebrating Mom of the Month, Christina Thornton! Christina and her daughter Adeline are regular participants at Stroller Strides. Fun for me - I can remember Christina’s very first class! This delightful momma brings genuine kindness and joy to our village, and I am so glad to know her. Read on to learn about Christina’s love for travel, work, and, of course, her sweet family:
Mom of the Month: Christina Thornton
How long have you been a Fit4Mom client, and in which program(s)?
About five months now? I’m not exactly sure, those first few months were such a blur! My daughter and I attend Stroller Strides. I think it its the perfect way to get my exercise in while still spending time with my little one!
Kiddo's name and age:
Adeline Ren Thornton - 6 months. My husband was determined to have her initials spell ART - so there you have it! I love it, too. Ren is Japanese for Lily or Lotus Flower. So fitting.
What's your favorite thing about Stroller Strides?
Being able to get out with other mammas while I am working out. I had no idea this program was out there, but as soon as I heard someone mention it at the breastfeeding circle I was attending, I looked it up. I thought, why not give this a try?
It’s absolutely perfect. I've found a way to exercise, be with my little lady and meet other mammas in the community. I feel like I am part of something special. Finding your way as a new mom can be challenging and it’s great to be around other mammas and get advice. Also, just this past week, I fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans! Woohoo! Thanks, Stroller Strides!
Do you have a favorite exercise/why?
Not really. Before Stroller Strides I practiced yoga regularly. I’d love to get back into it. I like how Stroller Strides offers a full-body workout, and that I get both cardio and strength-training work.
What's your favorite thing about being a mom?
Oh gosh. Where do I start? I guess it is feeling a love so deep, one that I never thought I was capable of. You know the song lyrics, “I never knew love before, then came you”? I guess I should look up the artist/song. I repeat those words daily, because they are so true.
I love the way she looks at me with her big brown eyes. The way she smiles and giggles. The way my husband Brandon interacts with her - watching them together is magic. There are so many things I love about being a mom, it’s hard to say which is my favorite. But most of all just being one I guess. Brandon and I struggled and there was a time I thought we might not ever be parents, so my favorite part is being able to be one at all.
What is something you wish you'd known before you became a mom?
I was so determined to get it exactly right when I was pregnant. I wanted to read all the books, take every class out there, go to prenatal yoga, go to acupuncture, and meditate. No matter how much you think you’ve prepared, it all comes down to survival those first few months! I didn’t need to have everything perfect. I wish I knew that no matter what, things would have been fine and those last few months of panic and fire drill to “get ready” weren't really that necessary.
Do you work outside of the home in addition to being a mom? If so, what do you do?
I am in the wine business. I work for a national importer and based out of Niles, Illinois called Winesellers, Ltd. I cover the Mid-Atlantic and represent wineries from most major wine producing regions. I LOVE my job! It combines so many different studies - history, geography, geology, oenology. The best part is traveling internationally to visit the wineries. My job has taken me all over the world!
Favorite way to relax and recharge after the kiddo is in bed?
What's something that most people don't know about you?
I love to travel. I went on Semester at Sea in college and it sparked my passion for seeing the world. I’m a certified yoga instructor. I got pregnant with Adeline while working on my 200 hour teacher training certificate, so I have yet to teach, but maybe one day!
Any advice for new moms?
It gets easier! I don’t think I’ll ever say it’s easy but man, those first few months were difficult. The transition into motherhood can be tough but once you get settled into your new life it becomes so exciting and rewarding.
